Unable to uninstall Sophos Home - Windows (Trouble Shooter)

Applies to: Sophos Home Premium and Free (Windows)

You encounter any of the following issues with your Sophos Home:

  • Continuously getting a message to restart the computer to uninstall or reinstall Sophos Home.
  • You receive uninstallation failed errors.
  • Sophos Home would not uninstall.
  • An issue with the installation of Sophos Home

Cause

These issues happen due to corrupted files or remnants from previous installations of Sophos Home or other Sophos versions, especially when using a third-party uninstaller that may delete components that are required to properly uninstall Sophos.

Solution 1

If you know the component that is failing to uninstall, follow these steps:

Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter

Microsoft has released a Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter to help fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.

  1. Click the Download button on this link to download the tool.
  2. Double-click the downloaded tool to run it.
  3. Follow the steps in the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter .

Solution 2

Windows File and Folder troubleshooter

This Windows file and folder repair tool from Microsoft automatically diagnose and repair problems with files and folders in Windows that may be preventing applications from installing.

  1. Click the Download button on this link to download the tool.
  2. Double-click the downloaded tool to run it.
  3. Follow the steps in the File and Folder troubleshooter .

Solution 3

Uninstall batch file - Advanced users

Follow the steps below to create and run a bat file to uninstall all the Sophos Home components from your Windows computer.

If tamper protection cannot be disabled via the below listed script (as in customers receive a message about tamper protection preventing the script to run ), follow the “steps to disable the Enhanced Tamper Protection” listed under “Managed by Sophos Central” as covered in this article . Then, re-run the bat file
Note : If trying to uninstall a Sophos version other than Sophos Home, please refer to Sophos Support for further assistance.

Creating and running the bat uninstall file:
1 -Copy and paste the following text into notepad:

2 -Click File–> Save As, choose a location such as your Desktop, or any desired folder.
Use this for File name: “SophosUninstaller.bat” (Note: quotation marks need to be included, this allows the file to saved with a specific extension - Don’t change the “Save as type” section).

3 - Right-click on SophosUninstaller.bat and choose Run as administrator .

4 - In the User Account Control window, click on Yes .

5-Wait for the tool to finish running.

7-Click OK to close the next window.

8- Remove the device from your Sophos Home Dashboard

9 -Restart the computer
